Self-editing tip # 1 – give yourself a brief

The first thing to do is to decide the purpose of the edit. Are you wanting to get a feel for the whole story or do you want to refine the writing on a line-by-line level? I recommend you don’t try to do both. Even professional editors don’t do that. If you get lost down a rabbit hole of refining a sentence, you will lose track of the pace and feel of the story and character development.
